As a surfer, I understand the importance of protecting my skin from the sun's harmful rays. That's why sunscreen is an essential part of my routine. However, traditional SPF products often contain chemicals that can harm not only my skin but also the ocean and marine life.

With the increasing awareness of the harmful effects of traditional SPF products on both our skin and the environment, more and more surfers are turning to natural alternatives for sun protection. These alternatives use ingredients that are safe for our skin and the ocean.

One of the most popular natural sunscreen alternatives is zinc oxide. This mineral acts as a physical barrier against UV rays and is safe for both humans and marine life. It is also biodegradable, making it an eco-friendly option for surfers.

Titanium dioxide

Not only is this a more sustainable option, but it also allows me to customize the formula to suit my skin's needs. Here are some DIY sunscreen recipes that I can try: Coconut oil sunscreen: Mix 1/4 cup of coconut oil with 2 tablespoons of zinc oxide powder. Add a few drops of my favorite essential oil for a pleasant scent. This sunscreen has an SPF of around 15 and is perfect for everyday use.

Shea butter sunscreen: Melt 1/4 cup of shea butter in a double boiler and mix in 2 tablespoons of zinc oxide powder. I can also add a few drops of carrot seed oil, which has natural SPF properties. This sunscreen has an SPF of around 20 and is great for days when I'll be spending more time in the water.

Aloe vera sunscreen:

Mix 1/4 cup of aloe vera gel with 2 tablespoons of titanium dioxide powder.

I can also add a few drops of lavender essential oil for its soothing properties. This sunscreen has an SPF of around 30 and is perfect for those long days out in the sun. Aside from using natural sunscreen alternatives, there are other ways to protect my skin while surfing. Here are some tips:

  • Wear a rash guard: A rash guard not only protects my skin from the sun but also from irritation caused by my surfboard or wetsuit.
  • Surf during off-peak hours: The sun's rays are strongest between 10 am and 4 pm, so I try to schedule my surf sessions outside of these hours.
  • Wear a hat: A wide-brimmed hat can provide extra protection for my face, neck, and ears.
  • Reapply sunscreen often: No matter what type of sunscreen I use, it's important to reapply it every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
As surfers, we have a responsibility to protect our skin and the environment.
