The register

A paid, alphabetical register that is not a recommendation

Surf schools, coastal clubs, water safety training providers and outdoor instructors, listed on disclosed facts. Not a ranking, and not a safety endorsement.

What the register is

A paid listing service. Surf schools, coastal clubs, water safety training providers and outdoor instructors pay to appear. Every entry is labelled as paid.

Entries are built out of facts that can be checked by anyone reading them: trading name, the coastline or waters they operate on, the qualification body and award held where an award applies, and whether public liability insurance is in place where it applies. That is the whole of it. No description written by us, no score, no stars, no badge, no editorial comment.

What the register is not

It is not a ranking. The order is alphabetical and does not change for money.

It is not a safety endorsement. This is the important sentence on the page. A listing tells you that an organisation paid to be listed and disclosed a set of facts. It does not tell you that they are safe, competent, well run or right for you.

We have assessed nobody. We do not inspect, audit, observe, test or visit. We are a publication about sun exposure, not a safety regulator, and we will not pretend otherwise by implying quality through a listing.

Choose a provider the way you would choose anyone you are handing your safety to: ask what qualification they hold and who awarded it, ask about insurance, ask about their ratio of instructors to people in the water, and read the RNLI water safety advice before you get in anywhere unfamiliar.

Current state of the register

The register is empty

There are no listings yet. We would rather say that than fill a page with organisations who never asked to be there, which is how most directories in this space are built and the reason most of them are worthless. When there are entries, they will be here, alphabetically, each labelled as paid.

How to be listed

The requirements, the price and the full list of things the money cannot buy are published at criteria and rates. Applications go through contact. We accept or refuse against the written criteria and not against the size of the invoice.

The tide line

One email a fortnight. What we have published, one correction if we got something wrong, and one note on the coming weeks that is not on the site. No products, no offers, no brand names.

We use your address for the newsletter and nothing else. Each issue may carry one labelled sponsor line, which buys no influence over anything we write. Details in newsletter and sponsorship and privacy.
