Travelling to stronger latitudes, and the mistake made in the first three days

Trips go wrong at the start rather than the end. Your instinct for how long you can be out is local knowledge, and it does not travel with you.

Short answer

A surfer's sense of how long they can be out before they suffer is calibrated to their home coastline, and it is a piece of local knowledge that does not travel. Arrive somewhere stronger and the same instinct produces a much larger exposure, at exactly the moment when enthusiasm is highest and sessions are longest. The first two or three days of a trip are where the damage lands, and they are the days to plan deliberately.

Your instinct is local knowledge

Anybody who has surfed the same coast for years has built a working model of it. You know roughly what a June morning does to your face. You know which sessions leave you feeling cooked and which do not. You have never articulated any of it, and it is a genuinely useful body of knowledge.

It is also entirely local. It was built on one latitude, one set of typical conditions and one seasonal pattern, and none of that comes with you when you fly somewhere else. What comes with you is the confidence, which is the part you would rather leave behind.

This is why the first days of a trip are the dangerous ones. Not because those days are special, but because you are operating a calibrated instrument in a place it was not calibrated for.

What actually changes when you travel

The rate is higher. Closer to the equator, the sun reaches a higher angle, so the ultraviolet has a shorter path through the atmosphere. The mechanism is in latitude, altitude and season.

The strong block is longer. Not only stronger at the peak but wider, so the edges of the day are less of a refuge than they are at home.

You are wearing less. Warm water means a shorty, a vest or nothing, which expands the exposed area at exactly the moment the rate went up.

You are out longer. You are on holiday. You paid to be there. The sessions are longer and there are more of them per day.

You are not surfing the rest of the time either. Beach time, terraces, viewpoints, high roads. Non surfing hours in the sun are a large share of a trip and they are the least protected.

Every one of those pushes the same way, and they arrive together on the first afternoon.

The pattern of a trip that goes wrong

It is remarkably consistent. Day one: a long session because you have arrived and the waves are good, with whatever was in the bag. Day two: worse, because day one already happened and you are now surfing on top of it. Day three: somebody in the group is genuinely uncomfortable and the rest of the trip is spent managing it.

What makes it consistent is that the exposure of the first days is not felt until later. There is no signal on the day, and the arrival day is when enthusiasm and lack of calibration are both at maximum.

The corollary is that a trip is won or lost in the first forty eight hours, and that a slightly conservative start costs almost nothing while a bad one costs the week.

What to do about it

Check the destination forecast before you pack, not after you land. Packing is the decision point and it happens at home.

Pack cover for the whole trip, not for the sessions. A long sleeved top, a cap, eye protection, and something for the hours you are not in the water.

Deliberately plan the first two days differently. Shorter sessions, more cover, or the edges of the day. Not as a rule for the whole trip, as a rule for the days when your calibration is wrong.

Assume your instinct is wrong by a wide margin. Not slightly wrong. The point of the instinct is that it feels reliable, so scepticism has to be deliberate.

Protect the non surfing hours. The afternoon at a viewpoint, the boat trip, the walk to the break. Those are usually in the strong block and usually unprotected because the session is over.

Do the same on the way home. The last day, sitting somewhere waiting for a flight, is still exposure.

On the idea of building up a base

Worth addressing because it comes up on every trip. The idea of using early exposure to build up some tolerance for later in the week is common and this manual is not the place to evaluate it.

What is worth knowing is that public health guidance in the UK, including from Cancer Research UK and the NHS, is not built around the idea of deliberate exposure to prepare skin for more exposure. If you want the position on that, read what those bodies actually say rather than what circulates on a beach, and take any question about your own skin to a GP.

What this manual can say is narrower and practical: whatever anybody believes about tolerance, a burn on day one makes the rest of the week worse in every respect, including how much you can surf. That argument does not require any medical claim at all.

The altitude days

Most surf trips include days that are not surfing days, and on many destinations those involve going up. Volcanic islands, mountain roads between coasts, viewpoints, hikes. Ultraviolet increases with altitude, and pale rock and, in some places, snow reflect strongly.

Those days are almost never protected, because the mental category is not a beach day. They are frequently the heaviest exposure of the trip. Take the cap and the top on the day off as well.

Travelling with other people

If you are the person who organised the trip, or the one who has been there before, you are effectively the one with the information. That does not make you responsible for anybody's skin, and it does make it worth mentioning on day one rather than on day three when somebody is suffering.

If you are taking children, or running any kind of group, the same points apply with more weight and less margin, and that is dealt with in coaching groups.

Plan the first two days deliberately, pack the cover at home where the decision is real, and protect the hours you are not surfing, which on most trips are more numerous than the hours you are.

Why do I always burn at the start of a trip?

What should I pack?

A long sleeved top, retained headwear, eye protection and something for the hours you are not in the water. The packing moment is the real decision point, because on arrival you can only use what you brought.

Do the days I am not surfing matter?

On most trips they are the majority of the daylight hours, they fall in the strong block, and they are the least protected because people consider the day's exposure over. Days at altitude are frequently the heaviest of the trip.

How long does it take to adjust?

This manual will not put a number on that, because it would be an invented figure about human physiology. What is practical and true is that a bad day one makes the rest of the week worse in every respect, including how much you can surf.

Is it different for the Canaries versus the south of France?

Both are stronger than a northern UK coast and both have longer strong seasons. The habits are the same ones applied more consistently and earlier in the day, rather than a different set of habits.
