Hydration and heat in a long session, framed as performance and safety

You lose fluid in cold water and never feel thirsty. Why hydration in surf is a performance and judgement question first, and where it stops being this manual's subject.

Short answer

Surfers lose fluid through sweat under a wetsuit, through breathing hard, and simply through hours outdoors, and cold water and wind suppress the thirst signal so nobody notices. The consequence people care about is performance and judgement: paddling power, decision making in the water and how you feel afterwards. Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are a clinical subject and belong to the NHS, not to a surf website.

Why hydration is in a manual about sun exposure

Because it shares the same structural problem. A long session with no way to correct anything, an environment that suppresses the warning signals, and a person who is enjoying themselves too much to notice.

It also matters for the reason people actually care about: performance. Nobody changes their behaviour because a website tells them to drink more water. Plenty of people change it when they realise their last hour is consistently worse than their first and they have been blaming their fitness.

Where the fluid goes

Sweat under a wetsuit. A suit is insulation, and paddling is work. You sweat inside it and the sweat has nowhere to go. On a warm day in a suit thicker than conditions need, that is substantial.

Breathing. Hard paddling, hold downs, and hours of exertion all lose fluid through respiration.

Hours outdoors. Wind and sun on the parts of you above water.

Before you even got there. Early starts, a long drive, coffee instead of water, no breakfast. Plenty of people paddle out already behind.

Why you do not notice

The same problem as everywhere else in this manual: the warning signal is suppressed by the environment.

Cold water and wind blunt the sensation of thirst. Being surrounded by water is psychologically confusing in a way that sounds silly and is real. And there is nothing to drink out there anyway, so even a noticed signal cannot be acted on, which trains you to ignore it.

The result is people getting out of the water after three hours having not thought about fluid once, driving home, and feeling flat for the rest of the day without connecting the two.

The performance case

This is the framing that actually changes behaviour, so it goes first rather than last.

Paddling is the whole sport. Getting out, getting into position, getting into waves, getting back out again. If your paddling is worse in the third hour than in the first, you catch fewer waves, you make worse decisions about which waves, and you are slower to get out of the way of things you should be getting out of the way of.

Some of that is simply fatigue and always will be. Some of it is fluid, and unlike fitness it can be fixed the same day, before you go out, for free.

The judgement part matters more than the paddling part. Deciding whether to go on a wave, whether to paddle for the channel, whether you have time, whether you should be here at all. Those decisions get worse when you are tired and depleted, and they are the decisions with consequences. The RNLI is the source on water safety generally and it is worth reading their material rather than assuming you already know it.

Heat, and where this manual stops

Heat strain in surf has a specific shape, described in wind and evaporative cooling: a wetsuit traps heat while wind and evaporation cool the parts of you above water, so your perception and your core can move in opposite directions. People often notice only when they get out, still in the suit, on a hot beach with no wind.

That is as far as this manual goes on the mechanism, because heat exhaustion and heatstroke are clinical matters. The NHS publishes what the signs are, what to do and when to seek help, and that is the source. This publication does not describe symptoms, will not tell you what to look for, and would be doing something wrong if it tried.

The practical version, which is squarely within remit: match the suit to the water rather than to how the beach feels, get out of the suit reasonably promptly on hot days rather than standing around in it, and read the NHS material once so you actually know it.

What to actually do

Drink before, not during. There is no during. Drink properly before you go out, which for an early start means before you leave the house as well as at the van.

Have something in the van. The same principle as everything else in this manual. The thing you need has to be physically present or it does not happen.

Drink in the gap between sessions. The one correction opportunity the sport offers, which most people use to eat a pasty and nothing else.

Drink afterwards. Including on cold days, when nobody feels like it and the deficit is just as real.

Match the suit to the water. Overdressing because the beach felt breezy is a common route to a hot, depleted session.
