The sense you do not have
Start with the fact everything else rests on. There is no receptor in human skin for ultraviolet. You cannot feel it arriving. The sensation people call feeling the sun on their skin is infrared warmth, which is a different part of the spectrum and is not what causes sunburn.
So the warning system most people rely on is already the wrong instrument. It is measuring one thing and being read as another. It works well enough on land in still air, because on a hot bright day both are high together and the correlation holds.
Wind breaks the correlation. On a wet surface it breaks it completely.
What evaporative cooling does to you
When water evaporates from a surface it takes heat with it. That is why sweat works, and it is why a wet head in a breeze goes cold quickly.
In surf you are permanently wet, permanently exposed to moving air whenever your head is above water, and frequently in genuinely strong wind. The head, the face, the hands and any exposed skin are losing heat continuously. The wetsuit prevents this over most of the body, which is exactly why the head and hands feel cold while the torso is fine.
The result is a person who feels cool or actively cold, on a day where ultraviolet is arriving at a steady rate onto their face, ears, neck and scalp for hours. Every internal signal says this is a mild situation. None of those signals is measuring the thing that matters.
The day this produces
The archetypal British version: clean offshore wind, cool air, bright but not obviously sunny, good waves, a long session because there is no reason to come in. Everyone gets out cold, happy and burned across the face and the back of the neck.
What makes it so consistent is that every element reinforces the others. The offshore wind grooms the waves, so the session runs long. It also strips heat, so nobody feels warm. The cool air means a full suit, so the only exposed skin is the head, which is also the area with no cover. And the light is often bright rather than obviously sunny, so the visual cue is weak too.
That is the day to build a default habit for, and it is the reason this manual argues for cover as a routine rather than as a response. The other direction: masked heat strain
The same mechanism causes a different problem in warm conditions, and it deserves its own treatment because the failure mode is more immediate.
A wetsuit is insulation. In warm water and warm air, a suit that is too thick for conditions traps heat that your body is trying to lose. Meanwhile the parts of you above water are being cooled by wind and evaporation, so your subjective sense is of a comfortable temperature or even a cool one. Your core can be heading in the opposite direction to your perception.
People notice this when they come out. The wind stops mattering because you are on the beach, the suit is still on, and the heat that was being masked arrives all at once. That is a recognised pattern in outdoor sport generally, and the practical version for surfers is worked through in hydration, heat and performance.
Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are the serious end of this, and they are a clinical subject. The NHS publishes what the signs are and what to do, and that is where anyone should read about it rather than getting it from a surf website. This manual's contribution is narrower: the reason surfers miss it is that evaporative cooling and cold water make the usual warning sensations unreliable in both directions.
What wind does to the face specifically
Beyond removing the warning, wind does mechanical work.
It dries what is on your skin. Anything applied is being dried, salted and worked by moving air for hours, which is part of why the face is the hardest area to keep protected. See wet skin and spray.
It chaps lips. Wind, salt and repeated wetting and drying leave lips raw, and raw lips get licked, which makes them worse. The NHS has straightforward material on dry and chapped lips.
It carries spray. Which stings, obscures vision, and adds to the glare problem covered in glare and eye protection.
It makes people put their heads down. A session spent hunched into the wind is a session where the back of the neck is presented upward for hours, which is the area this environment damages most reliably.
What to actually do about it
The response is not to try harder at sensing exposure, because that is not a skill anyone has. It is to remove sensation from the decision entirely.
Set cover from the forecast and the calendar, not from comfort. If it is spring or later, the head and back of the neck get covered regardless of how the day feels.
Treat wind as a warning rather than as reassurance. The windier and cooler it feels, the less you should trust your judgement about the session.
Match the wetsuit to the water, not to the wind. Overdressing because it feels cold on the beach is a common way to end up overheated in warm water. The wind is cooling your head, not your core.
Drink before and after. You will not notice thirst in cold wind and you are losing fluid anyway. This is covered properly in the hydration article.
What to take away
Skin cannot sense ultraviolet, so warmth is a proxy, and wind on wet skin destroys the proxy. A cold feeling session on a bright spring day is the single most reliable way to get burned in this sport.
The same masking works the other way in warm conditions, where a suit plus evaporative cooling can hide a rising heat load until you are out of the water. In both directions the answer is the same: decide from the forecast and the calendar, not from how you feel.
