Wet skin, spray and the surface you actually present to the sun

Wet skin does not behave like dry skin under the sun, and salt spray on the face does more than sting. What is really happening on the surface across a three hour session.

Short answer

Skin in surf is never dry. It is wet, salty, cooled by evaporation, worked by wind and repeatedly wiped, and that combination changes both how anything applied behaves and how well you sense what is happening. The useful response is not to chase a dry surface, which is impossible, but to build the protection into things that do not care whether you are wet: garments, headwear and a plan made before entry.

The surface is never dry, and never the same twice

Every general instruction about sun protection assumes a stable surface. Clean, dry skin, something applied evenly, left alone. In surf none of those conditions hold for more than the first two minutes.

From the moment you paddle out, your skin is wet, coated in salt water, drying and re wetting continuously, cooled by evaporation, hit by spray, rubbed by a wetsuit collar and by your own hands, and periodically wiped clear so you can see. That is the environment anything applied has to survive, and it is why this manual treats applied product as one part of a system rather than as the system.

What being wet actually does

Several things happen at once, and it is worth separating them because they have different answers.

Water on the surface changes how light behaves at the boundary. A film of water on skin is not a barrier. Wet skin is not shielded skin, and the intuition that being soaked somehow provides cover is simply wrong. This is worth stating plainly because a surprising number of people hold it without ever having examined it.

Water carries things off. Anything applied is in continuous contact with moving water, and moving water removes material. This is the mechanism behind everything in what repeated immersion does.

Evaporation removes the heat signal. A wet head in wind loses heat rapidly. Since heat sensation is the crude warning most people use for sun exposure, and it is already the wrong signal, removing it entirely leaves you with no feedback at all. See wind and evaporative cooling.

Salt dries into a crust. As water evaporates, salt is left behind on skin, hair, eyebrows and eyelashes, and on your board and your suit. That crust is abrasive and it is part of why the face feels raw after a long session.

The wiping problem

Here is the specific mechanical fact that ruins face protection in surf, and nobody plans for it.

You cannot see with salt water in your eyes. So every time you come up from a duck dive, every time you take a wave on the head, every time you wipe out, you clear your face with your hand or your forearm. Over a three hour session that is not a handful of wipes, it is a continuous process. And the areas you wipe hardest are the eyes, the forehead, the upper cheeks and the top of the nose, which are the areas most exposed.

Any thin, low visibility film on those areas is being removed methodically by your own hand for the length of the session. That is one of the practical reasons that thicker, opaque, visible formats have been adopted by people who spend a lot of time in the water: not because of a marketing claim, but because you can see whether it is still there, and it is heavy enough that a single wipe does not clear it. The wetsuit collar

The other mechanical loss is friction at the neck. A wetsuit collar sits against the jawline and the underside of the chin and moves against it with every paddle stroke and every head turn. Anything applied to the jaw, the underside of the chin and the upper neck is being abraded continuously.

This matters because those are exactly the areas that the reflected component from the water reaches, described in reflection off water. You have an area that receives light from below, and a mechanism that removes protection from it faster than anywhere else on your body. That combination is why the underside of the jaw is such a reliable place to burn in this sport.

The answer is not to give up on it, it is to recognise that a garment reaching that area is worth more than an application to it. A top with a high neck, or a hood, is not being rubbed off.

Spray and the eyes

Spray does two things worth separating. It stings, which everybody knows. And it puts a fine layer of moving droplets in the air in front of your face, each one scattering light, which is part of why the glare in offshore conditions is so punishing. That is dealt with properly in glare and eye protection.

There is also a simple comfort point that turns into an exposure point. Salt irritation makes people squint, and squinting for three hours is uncomfortable enough that people cut sessions short or, more often, spend the session with their eyes half closed and their head down. Neither is a safety improvement in water where you need to see what is coming.

Lips are a special case here

Lips are wet, licked, salted, wiped and constantly in contact with water, and they have no protection of their own. They are also receiving both the direct component from above and the reflected component from below. In terms of surface conditions they are the single hardest area on the body to keep anything on, and they are the area people think about least.

They get their own article at lips, because the combination of biology and behaviour there is specific enough to deserve it.

What actually works on a wet surface

Three principles come out of all of the above, and none of them involve trying to keep your skin dry.

Prefer cover over application wherever cover is possible. A garment does not care that you are wet. It is not wiped off, not abraded away by a collar, and does not need to be reapplied. Everything in cover as the primary control follows from this.

Apply to clean dry skin before anything else happens. Before the wetsuit, before the walk down, before the wax. Once your hands are wet and salty you have lost the opportunity. Detail in application timing and coverage.

Accept that the face will be worked and choose formats accordingly. On the areas that get wiped, something you can see is more useful than something you cannot, because at least you know whether it is still there.

What to take away

Wet skin is not protected skin. Across a session your face is wet, salted, cooled, abraded by a collar and cleared by your own hand dozens of times, and anything applied is fighting all of that at once.

Put the weight on things that do not care about water: garments, headwear, a high neck, eye protection, and an application done properly on dry skin before you leave the sand.

Questions people actually ask

Does wet skin burn more easily?

A film of water is not a barrier, so wet skin is not shielded skin. The bigger practical issue is that water and wiping remove anything you applied, and evaporation removes the heat sensation you might otherwise use as a warning.

Why does my face burn but not my shoulders?

In a wetsuit the shoulders are covered and the face is not. The face is also wiped repeatedly, abraded by the collar at the jaw, and receiving reflected light from the water on its downward facing surfaces.

Does salt water damage skin?

Salt drying on skin is drying and abrasive, which is a comfort and skin barrier question rather than an ultraviolet one. Rinsing with fresh water after a session is worth doing. If you have a skin condition that surf sessions aggravate, that is a GP or pharmacist question.

Should I reapply during a session if I can?

If you genuinely come in, have fresh water, dry your hands and have somewhere to sit, then yes. In practice almost nobody does any of that mid session, which is why this manual puts the weight on what you can decide before entry.

Is a thick visible format better than a thin one on the face?

In this environment, being able to see whether it is still on your face is a real advantage, and heavier formats are not removed by a single wipe. That is why long time water users adopted them, and it is a practical property rather than a claim about performance.

What about my lips?

Lips are wet, licked, salted and wiped, they have no melanin defence of their own and they receive light from above and below. They are covered separately because the combination is specific.
