What this article is, and what it is not
This is a description of what real conditions do. It is not about test procedures, laboratory protocols or how water resistance is assessed and labelled, which is a different subject with its own standards and its own regulatory framing. This manual stays on the conditions side of that line.
The reason for the distinction is practical. A test tells you how a product performed in a defined procedure. A surf session is not a defined procedure. It is three hours of water, friction, wind, salt, sand and hands, in a sequence nobody controls, and understanding those mechanisms tells you where to put your effort.
The five things acting on it
Moving water. Not still immersion. Water moving across skin at speed, repeatedly, in white water and duck dives and paddling. Moving water removes material from a surface far more effectively than sitting in a bath does.
Friction from equipment. The chest and forearms are in contact with a board deck for a large part of a session, and the deck is waxed and often gritty with sand. The jaw and neck are in contact with a wetsuit collar that moves with every stroke. These are abrasive contacts, sustained for hours.
Your own hands. Clearing your eyes and face is not optional and it happens constantly. It is the single most effective removal mechanism operating on the most exposed part of you.
Wind and evaporation. Drying, and in some formats causing flaking or migration. On a windy day the face is being worked by moving air for the entire session.
Salt and sand. Salt crystallises out as water evaporates and is mildly abrasive. Sand on hands, on the board and on a towel adds mechanical removal at every contact.

Working framework of this manual. It is not a measurement, it is not drawn from any study, and it carries no numbers we cannot source.
It does not degrade evenly
The useful insight is that these mechanisms are not spread across your body equally. They concentrate.
The forehead, the nose and the area around the eyes lose protection fastest because they are wiped most. The jaw and the underside of the chin lose it next because of collar friction. The chest and inner forearms lose it because of board contact. The ears and the back of the neck lose it more slowly, because nothing touches them, which is a small mercy given that those are the places most exposed.
That unevenness is why the burn pattern from a long session so often looks patchy or asymmetric. It is not that you applied badly. It is that different areas were subjected to different removal rates for three hours.
What this implies for how you use applied product
Four conclusions, none of which is that applied product is pointless.
It is the layer for what cover cannot reach. The face, the lips, the ears, the backs of the hands, the tops of the feet. Cover handles the rest, and cover does not degrade. See cover as the primary control.
Application quality at entry matters more than it does on land. Because you cannot correct it, the application you do on the sand is the only one you get. That means clean dry skin, enough material, time to settle, and covering the areas people habitually miss. See application timing and coverage.
Visibility is a genuine practical property here. Being able to see whether something is still on your face is worth something in an environment where you cannot feel whether it is. Do not plan hour three around it. Whatever is left at hour three is less than what you started with, by an amount nobody can tell you. The plan for hour three has to be the garment and the headwear, because those are the things that are certainly still there.
What not to conclude
Two wrong conclusions are common enough to name.
Not that it is worthless. It is not. Something on your face for the first part of a session is materially better than nothing, and on the areas cover cannot reach it is the only option available. The point is where it sits in the hierarchy, not whether it belongs.
Not that a claim on a label solves it. Labelling and water resistance testing are a real and regulated subject with published standards behind them, and they are somebody else's remit. But no label can describe a three hour session with wiping, collar friction and wind, because that is not what any test represents. Treating a claim as a guarantee for a surf session is asking it to answer a question it was not asked.
The wetsuit as the honourable exception
Worth stating clearly, because it is the good news in this article. Neoprene does not degrade across a session. It does not wash off, wipe off, dry out or migrate. Whatever it covers at the start of a session, it covers at the end.
That single property is why the whole logic of this manual points towards cover. In an environment that dismantles everything you apply, the things that are physically in the way keep working. Which makes the interesting question not what to put on, but what is left uncovered, and that is the subject of the wetsuit gap.
What to take away
Moving water, equipment friction, wind, salt and your own hands all act on whatever you applied, continuously, unevenly and for the whole session, and none of it can be corrected once you are out there.
So use applied product for what cover cannot reach, apply it properly on dry skin before you leave the sand, and build the plan for hour three around the garment and the headwear rather than around anything that can be removed.
