The suit as cover, properly considered
Nobody buys a wetsuit for sun protection and almost nobody thinks of it as sun protection. It is worth thinking of it that way for a moment, because doing so makes the rest of the year's decisions obvious.
Neoprene is thick, dense and opaque. Over every panel it covers, ultraviolet is not an issue at all, and unlike anything applied it does not wash off, wipe off, dry out or need renewing. It is the most reliable piece of sun cover in the sport by a wide margin.
Which means that when you are wearing a full suit with boots, gloves and a hood, your exposed area is a small oval of face, and that is the entire exposure problem. On the coldest days of a British winter, the sun is at its weakest and you are at your most covered. Two things working in the same direction, for once.
The four edges
The neck. The largest and most consistently exposed gap. A suit collar sits somewhere on the neck, and everything above it, meaning the throat, the jaw, the back of the neck and the ears, is out. It is also the area with the highest exposure in this sport for reasons of posture. See the back of the neck.
The wrists. Without gloves, everything from the cuff outward is exposed, meaning the backs of the hands and often a strip of forearm when the cuff rides up. The backs of the hands face the sky on every paddle stroke and are almost never protected.
The ankles. Without boots, the tops of the feet and the ankles are exposed, and the tops of the feet face upward whenever you sit on a board with your legs in the water. Foot burns are common, painful and surprising to almost everyone who gets one.
The face. Permanent, and unavoidable. Application territory, and covered in the exposed ground section.

The spring transition, which is the real subject
The edges are worth knowing. The seasonal change is worth planning for, and it is where most of the damage in a British surfing year happens.
Sun angle climbs from the spring equinox onward. Sea temperature reaches its annual minimum in late winter or early spring and lags behind the sun by months. So there is a period, roughly from mid spring to early summer on most of the UK coast, in which the ultraviolet is climbing steeply while the water is still cold enough that nothing about the day suggests summer.
Then, at some point in that period, the suit gets thinner. The hood goes. The gloves go. The boots go. The full suit becomes a spring suit or a shorty. Each of those changes adds exposed area, and every one of them happens in the weeks when the index is rising fastest.
Nobody plans for it, because it does not feel like a decision. It feels like relief. And the outcome is that a large share of British surfers get their most severe burn of the year not in the middle of August but somewhere in late spring, on the back of the neck, the ears, the hands and the face.
What to do about the transition
The remedy is a rule tied to the calendar rather than to the temperature, because temperature is the signal that misleads.
From spring, headwear becomes a default. The day the hood comes off is the day a cap goes in the bag, permanently, for the rest of the year. This is the single most useful rule in this article.
The day the gloves come off, the backs of the hands become an application area. They are small, they are quick, and nobody does them.
The day the boots come off, the tops of the feet join the list. Same logic.
The day the suit gets shorter, a long sleeved top goes in the bag. Not necessarily worn every session, but present, so the choice exists.
None of that requires you to assess a day correctly, which is the point. It replaces judgement with a sequence of triggers tied to changes you were making anyway.
Wetsuit tan lines, and what they are telling you
Every surfer has them and everyone finds them slightly funny. They are also the clearest possible map of what your kit covers and what it does not, and they are free information.
Look at where the line falls at your neck, your wrists and your thighs. That boundary is exactly where your cover stops. If the line at your neck is low, your suit is leaving more of your throat and jaw out than you thought. If there is a line above your wrist, your cuffs are riding up.
It is not a reason for alarm. It is a diagram, and you may as well read it.
The summer end of the range
At the far end, in warm water, the suit is gone entirely and you are in boardshorts or a swimsuit. That is the maximum exposed area in the sport, in the strongest part of the year, for a session that will run long because the water is warm.
Everything in the cover section applies most strongly here, and this is where a long sleeved top does the most work. The gap between a warm water session with a top and headwear and one without is the largest single difference in exposed area anywhere in this sport.
What to take away
A wetsuit is the best piece of sun cover you own, so the exposure question in a suit is the perimeter: neck, wrists, ankles and face. Read your tan lines to see exactly where that perimeter sits.
The important part is seasonal. Tie your habits to the moments the suit gets shorter rather than to how warm the day feels, because those moments fall in the weeks when the ultraviolet is climbing fastest and nobody is paying attention.
