What a UPF rating on a garment is actually describing

A garment rating describes how a fabric performed in a published test, not how your top will behave wet and stretched after two seasons. What the label means, by function.

Short answer

A UPF rating describes how much ultraviolet a fabric transmitted under a published test standard, assessed on the fabric rather than on you. It is a property of the material as tested, and real conditions change the material: wetting, stretching, wear and washing all matter. It is useful as a comparison between garments and misleading if read as a promise about your session.

What the rating is

UPF stands for ultraviolet protection factor, and it is applied to textiles. It is assessed by measuring how much ultraviolet passes through a fabric sample under a defined laboratory procedure, and expressing that as a rating.

The important word is fabric. It is a material property measured on a sample, under specified conditions, by a laboratory. It is not a measurement of you, your garment as worn, or your session.

Standards exist for this, published through the recognised standards bodies, covering both the test method and how the resulting claim may be presented on a garment. The British Standards catalogue is where the relevant documents sit for the UK, and the standards themselves are purchasable documents rather than free web pages, which is why this manual describes them by function rather than quoting them.

What actually drives how much a fabric blocks

The physical factors are intuitive once listed, and knowing them is more useful than memorising a rating.

How tightly the fabric is constructed. Gaps between yarns let light through directly. A tight weave or knit blocks more than an open one. Hold a fabric up to the light: if you can see through it easily, so can ultraviolet.

Fibre type. Different fibres absorb ultraviolet to different degrees, independent of construction.

Colour and dye. Darker and more saturated colours generally absorb more, other things being equal. This runs directly against the instinct to wear light colours in the heat, which is a comfort decision rather than a protection one.

Weight and thickness. More material between the sun and skin.

Finishes. Some fabrics carry treatments intended to absorb ultraviolet. Treatments are not permanent in general terms, and how they behave over the life of a garment is a real question.

What changes in real use

This is the part that matters for surfing and the part a rating on a swing tag cannot cover.

Wetting. Many fabrics transmit more ultraviolet when wet than when dry. Water fills the spaces between fibres and changes how light travels through the material. For a sport conducted entirely wet, this is not a footnote.

Stretching. Stretch a knitted fabric and you open the gaps in it. A close fitting garment on a paddling shoulder is stretched, repeatedly, exactly where it is tightest.

Wear. Fabric thins with use. Seasons of salt, sun, sand and washing do not leave a garment as it left the shop.

Fit and coverage. A rating tells you about the fabric, not about the fact that the sleeve stops above your wrist, the neck sits low, or the back rides up when you paddle. Coverage is a design property and it is at least as important as the number.

How to use the rating sensibly

Three uses, all modest, all genuine.

As a comparison between two garments. If two tops are otherwise similar, the rating is meaningful information about the fabric.

As a signal of intent. A garment rated and marked to a published standard has been made with the property in mind, and the construction usually reflects that.

As a floor, not a promise. It tells you the fabric was capable of a given performance under test. It does not tell you what your wet, stretched, three season old top is doing in hour three.

What it should not be used for is as licence to extend a session or skip everything else. Nothing on a label changes the fact that your face is uncovered.

Unrated clothing is not unprotective

Worth saying loudly, because the ratings market can imply otherwise. Ordinary clothing provides real cover. A closely woven long sleeved top with no marking on it whatsoever is doing a great deal more than bare skin, and public health guidance on covering up has never been conditional on buying a rated garment.

The practical hierarchy for a surfer is: wearing something with sleeves beats wearing nothing by a wide margin. Wearing something rated beats wearing something unrated by a smaller margin. Do not let the second comparison stop you making the first.

Where wetsuits sit

Neoprene is thick, dense and opaque, and it is not typically marketed with a UPF number because it does not need to be. It is substantial physical cover over the area it encloses. Nobody worries about ultraviolet through a 4mm chest panel.

Which is exactly why the interesting question about wetsuits is the perimeter rather than the panel, and that is the whole of the wetsuit gap.

Choosing a top, without anybody recommending one

This manual names no products, so here is the functional specification instead. A top for surf sun cover needs to do six things.

Cover the arms to the wrist, because the forearms face the sky when you paddle. Reach the neck rather than stopping at the collarbone, because the neck is the area that suffers most. Fit closely enough not to drag but not so tightly that it is permanently stretched. Be constructed tightly enough that you cannot see daylight through it. Survive salt and repeated washing without going thin. And be comfortable enough that you actually put it on, because a garment you find irritating is a garment that stays in the van.

That last criterion is the one people underweight and it is the one that determines whether any of this happens.

What to take away

A UPF rating describes a fabric under a laboratory test, not your garment in the water. Wetting, stretching, wear and fit all change what a real top does, and coverage matters at least as much as the number.

Use ratings to compare garments, not as a promise. And remember that unrated clothing with sleeves is enormously better than nothing, which is the comparison that actually decides your session.

Questions people actually ask

Does UPF mean the same as SPF?

No. UPF is applied to textiles and is assessed by measuring transmission through a fabric under a published test standard. SPF applies to products applied to skin and is assessed differently. They are not interchangeable and comparing the numbers directly is meaningless.

Does a fabric protect less when it is wet?

Many fabrics transmit more ultraviolet wet than dry, because water changes how light travels through the material. For a sport conducted entirely wet this matters, and it is a reason to favour tighter construction.

Is a dark top better than a light one?

Darker and more saturated colours generally absorb more ultraviolet, other things being equal. It runs against the instinct to wear light colours for heat, so it is a genuine trade off between comfort and cover.

Do I need a rated garment at all?

No. Ordinary closely woven clothing provides real cover and public health guidance on covering up has never required a rated purchase. Ratings are useful for comparison, and the difference between a top and no top is far larger.

Does a wetsuit have a UPF rating?

Not usually, because neoprene is thick and opaque and the question does not arise over the panels. The exposure question with a wetsuit is entirely about the areas it leaves open.
