The shape of the year
Two curves run through a British surfing year and they are out of phase with each other.
Sun angle follows the calendar exactly. It climbs from the winter solstice, crosses the equinox in March, peaks at midsummer and falls back symmetrically. It does the same thing every year and it can be predicted precisely.
Water and air temperature lag behind. The sea reaches its annual minimum in late winter or early spring, months after the shortest day, and its maximum in late summer, weeks after the longest. Air temperature lags too, less severely.
That phase difference is the entire subject of this article. There is a stretch of the year when the sun is behaving like late spring and the water is behaving like winter, and it is the stretch where British surfers get caught.
Winter, roughly November to February
Low exposure, high time in the water for the people who surf through it.
Full suit, boots, gloves, often a hood. Exposed area is a small oval of face and, without gloves, the hands. Sun angle is at its lowest, the days are short, and the middle block barely exists as a concept. On the coldest bright days there is real light off the water, and the exposure is still small because there is almost nothing uncovered.
The useful winter habit is minimal: something on the face and lips, and gloves and boots kept on. The face still catches it on a bright day, and lips get destroyed by cold wind regardless of ultraviolet.
Spring, roughly March to May: the dangerous window
This is where the year is decided.
Sun angle climbs steeply from the equinox onward. Every week the middle of the day gets stronger. Meanwhile the sea is at or near its coldest, the air is cold, and nothing whatsoever about a March or April day on a British beach suggests sun protection.
Then the kit changes. The hood comes off, usually on the first genuinely pleasant day. Gloves go. Boots go. At some point the full suit becomes a spring suit. Each change adds exposed area, and each one happens during the steepest part of the climb.
The result is that a large share of British surfers get the worst burn of their year somewhere in late spring, on the back of the neck, the ears, the face and the hands. It is not bad luck. Summer, roughly June to August
The strongest block, the longest days, the warmest water, the least clothing and the longest sessions. Everything at maximum.
It is also the part of the year people actually think about, which is why summer is not where most of the damage happens. The habits that need building are the ones already covered throughout this manual: a long sleeved top, retained headwear, a careful application to the face, ears and lips, and a bias towards the edges of the day where the tide allows it.
The specific summer trap is the long session. The water is warm enough that nothing forces you in, so sessions run to three and four hours. That is the duration argument at its strongest, from duration is the variable.
Autumn, roughly September to October
The best time of year to surf in Britain by most measures, and a genuinely mixed exposure picture.
The sea is at its warmest, so people are still in summer kit or thin suits. Sun angle has fallen from the peak but is still well above the winter floor, particularly in early September. Days are long enough for long sessions and the swell is better than it has been all year.
The autumn habit is simply not to drop the summer routine as soon as the schools go back. Early September is not a low exposure month, and it is one where nobody is thinking about it any more.
Setting the year up as triggers
The practical version of everything above is a short list of triggers tied to things you already do, rather than a calendar you have to consult.
Equinox. Headwear goes in the bag permanently and stays there until the clocks go back.
Hood off. A cap replaces it that same session.
Gloves off. Backs of the hands join the application routine.
Boots off. Tops of the feet join it.
Suit gets shorter. A long sleeved top lives in the bag.
Schools go back. Change nothing. That is the point.

Local variation
Britain is long. The seasonal picture on a north Scottish coast is not the picture on the north Devon coast, and both differ from the Channel. Sea temperature, typical conditions and the length of the shoulder seasons all vary.
What does not vary is the structure: sun angle leads, water temperature lags, and the gap between them is where the exposure problem lives. Adjust the months to your coast and the logic holds everywhere in the UK and Ireland. The Met Office publishes the UV forecast for wherever you are and that is the local number.
What to take away
