What you actually gain
At a low sun angle, sunlight crosses a much longer path through the atmosphere and more of the ultraviolet is absorbed and scattered away before it reaches you. The daily curve has a pronounced peak in the middle and much lower values at the ends, and the mechanism is set out in the hours that matter.
Three properties make this the most valuable single change available.
It changes the rate, not the barrier. Everything else you do is a barrier between you and a fixed amount of arriving radiation. A barrier can fail, wash off, be applied badly or be left at home. A lower sun angle cannot.
It works on what you cannot cover. The face, the lips, the area around the eyes. These are the places where cover is unavailable and where a lower rate is the only lever.
It stacks. Timing and cover are not alternatives. A dawn session with a long sleeved top and a cap is a different order of exposure from a midday one in boardshorts.
What you give up
Any article that presents dawn patrol as a free win is not written by somebody who surfs.
The tide may not work. Breaks work on specific parts of the tide and the tide does not care about the sun. Over a fortnight the window moves all the way round, so the edges of the day are sometimes available and sometimes not.
The wind may be wrong. Morning offshores are common on many coasts, which helps. Evenings are less reliable and onshore afternoons often persist.
It is cold. Early is colder, which is a comfort issue and, in winter, more than that.
Light. Reading the water in low light is harder, and glare from a low sun sitting directly in your eye line is its own problem, discussed in glare and eye protection.
Life. Not everyone can be on a beach at six in the morning, and telling them to is a way of talking only to people who could already do it.

The safety trade off, taken seriously
This is the part usually left out and it should not be.
At the edges of the day there are fewer people in the water. On many beaches lifeguard cover operates within set hours and seasons, which means a dawn or late evening session may be outside them entirely. Light is worse, so spotting somebody in difficulty is harder and so is being spotted. Evening sessions come at the end of a day when people are tired.
None of that means do not surf at those times. It means the exposure argument and the water safety argument point in different directions, and pretending otherwise would be irresponsible. The RNLI publishes the guidance on beach and water safety, including lifeguard cover, and it is the source to use rather than anything on this site.
The practical middle ground most people arrive at: mid morning and late afternoon are meaningfully better than the middle of the day for exposure, keep you inside normal lifeguard hours in season, and do not require surfing in poor light. That is a smaller gain than a true dawn patrol and it is a gain you can take on any day of the week without a new set of risks.
The trap: an early start that runs into the middle of the day
The commonest way this strategy fails is not that people do not do it. It is that they do it and then stay out.
A dawn start in summer, on good waves, easily runs three or four hours, which puts the back half of the session squarely in the strong block. The exposure benefit of entering early is largely gone by then, and the person is congratulating themselves on an early start.
Which brings this straight back to the point made everywhere in this manual: an early start is a decision about the rate at entry, not a decision about the whole session. Cover is still the control that runs for the duration, and the session length is still the term nobody manages. See duration is the variable.
The seasonal version
Over a year on a UK coast the strategy changes shape. In winter there is no strong block worth avoiding, the days are short, and the timing question is about light and warmth rather than exposure. From spring onwards the middle block builds and the argument gets stronger. In midsummer the day is long enough that both edges are comfortably available and the middle block is at its strongest.
Which means the useful habit is seasonal: from late spring, when you have a genuine choice of tide window, take the earlier or later one. That is a small bias applied consistently, which is worth more than a heroic rule applied twice and abandoned.
What to take away
Entering at a low sun angle lowers the rate for the whole session, cannot wash off, and helps most on the areas you cannot cover. It is the single largest change available.
The costs are real: tide, wind, cold, light and a genuine water safety trade off outside lifeguard hours. Mid morning and late afternoon capture much of the gain without the new risks, and an early start that runs four hours has spent most of the benefit by the time it ends.
